We’re 25
WHO SAYS WE’RE OLD?
by LEELIN LLAGUNO-FLORA
Wow! Twenty five years.
Does this mean we’re getting old? In our youth, we had the most wonderful times of our lives right within the Bicol University High School campus, right? Now, we’re back chasing the silver years of our times.
What are reunions for, anyway? My dear classmates, we have all the reasons for a reunion, don’t you think? Like, renewing off friendships, and acquaintances, networking or reliving the yesteryears.
So what do we want this reunion to be? If you are to ask me, I want this to be remembered as an opportunity for every member of Class 1978 to reconnect with the past. I want this to be remembered as an opportunity for all of us to offer a glimpse of who we were and what we are now. But hold it. This reunion is a celebration of the good times we had in high school. So, let this not be an occasion to show off our accomplishments or to impress anybody. Yes, we may be rich or poor, plum or slim, bald or still hairy, with wrinkles or wrinkle-free, full of saddlebags or none at all, with grey hair or dyed hair, work-out freak or with joints already starting to click, successful or a failure, but the true spirit of coming home should matter most…….that is – reviving friendships, camaraderie, unity and bringing joy to each and every classmate.
Though dismaying as it may, it poses a challenge to all of us. Shall we abet misplaced tradition and look down to our own less-fortunate classmates, or shall we celebrate based on the true spirit? Well, it will be politically correct and polite to go with the latter. Let’s have a good time on our 25th year Alumni Homecoming. Let’s have more school spirit, more fond memories.
Achievements should be recognized, however, surviving 25 years is not a mere feat. It’s a real achievement in itself. So dear classmates, its high time that we start refreshing ourselves and attitudes and renew our bonds with our immediate circle.
So what made us a real bunch of proud Bicolanos after all these years? We survived Martial Law, flare pants, yucky hairstyles, kicked out a despot and impeached another President, witnessed and may have participated in the rise of Bicolanos to national and international prominence, killed several rebels, rallied behind ita’s, kept on eating hot food… the list goes on. But in the truest sense, we deserve pats on our backs for being what we are today – obese, aging, balding and maybe sickly, etc. but hey, that’s what life is. And, life goes on even if we’re not what we dreamt of, what we should be today or even if we are what we dreamt to be.
And what makes life worth living more, than knowing that your classmate, your crush, your archrival, the class bully or your favorite nerd – is also having the same problems in life and situation as you do. Only in reunions where you can get in touch with your own high school crowd. It makes attending reunions a healthy activity. So let’s enjoy!
Owrayt!
