Preparing the Souvenir Program….Whew!

Sad to say, Filipinos are almost always late. Preparation of the souvenir program for the 25th Year Homecoming of BUHS Class ’78 is no exception. As early as last year, we have already been reminding our classmates based in Bicol, Manila and wherever to send pictures, articles and information about class and personal happenings so that we could place them in the souvenir program, but no luck amigos. Now, that we are in the midst of rushing to have the program printed, we have to make frequent changes…include pictures of Catoy Apin, the late Meo Nullas’ family receiving financial assistance from BUHS Class ’78, Leelin Llaguno-Flora and company’s sexy pictures wearing tights and leotards (you have to agree with me, they’re sexy), class picture of Section 2 (Leelin is wondering why this picture was in her “baul”), last-minute articles mostly done by Manila-based classmates (hope nobody makes a fuss), other pictures from long-ago, program of activities by Catoy and Lex Armeña and additional ad spaces. Of course, we are not complaining because we want to have as many materials as possible.
Malen Llona started scanning the pictures only a few days ago, Leelin is in-charge of editing and over-all supervision of the work while Ralph, Leelin’s husband (we should adopt him as he has been so helpful) is preparing the layout. Unfortunately, Malen and Ralph are the only ones who know PageMaker and Corel Draw/Paint. Everything should be camera-ready before we give to the printing press, as there is simply no time for them to do it themselves. As our homecoming is getting near, the tension and the excitement are rubbing on everybody’s, including our families who have been very supportive and understanding. Malen is already having an upset stomach. Leelin is practically at Ralph’s back egging him to do the work faster. Would you believe? Francis Alaurin is now a coffee boy preparing coffee so that nobody feels sleepy. Catoy passed by Malen’s house where all the preparations are being done so he knew how things are going. I asked Leelin when she and Ralph are going to Bicol and she said, “After the printing of the souvenir program”. I hope it will not be after 19 April 2003.
I didn’t know that it is real hard work to do a souvenir program. My experience when I was Editor-In-Chief of DWCL’s student paper was, we did the dummy and the press-proof, the printing house did the rest…filming, typesetting, etc., etc. I guess what I knew was archaic; there was no PageMaker and Corel Draw/Paint then. I also understand that we have to scrimp with the funds, hence do the work ourselves as we want to give a donation to BUHS, leave some funds to the next batch of officers and have some extra for contingencies. So, here is Ralph and Francis leaving Malen’s house at 2:00 a.m. You know, it is difficult and time-consuming changing Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes’ picture from colored to black-and-white, erasing the scratches of pictures of long-ago, cropping pictures so that only the best come out, editing articles to make them politically correct and definitely writing about happenings we have already archived in our memories to fill in the gaps in the program’s layout.
