BU regent elects new president

LEGAZPI CITY – Dr. Fay Lea Patria Mata-Lauraya has been elected by the Board of Regents (BOR) as the 7th President of the Bicol University (BU).
She assumed the presidency of the only state university in Bicol last March 9 after the retirement of Dr. Susana Cabredo.
Dr. Lauraya, 49, holds the distinction of being the youngest President of BU. She will hold office from 2007 to 2011.
Before her election to the presidency, she was Vice President for Production.
A product of the Bicol University, she finished her elementary grades as salutatorian at the BU Laboratory School in 1971; graduated first honorable mention at the BU Laboratory High School in 1975.
In college, she graduated with an AB Economics degree (magna cum laude) at Aquinas University in 1980. She obtained her Ph.D. in Development Management from BU in 1998 and Master in Management from the same university in 1989. In the summer of 1982-83, she finished 15 units of Master in Business Administration Program at Ateneo de Manila University.
In an interview with the Bicol Mail, Lauraya said that her vision of a university of excellence is by “taking the lead in educating and developing highly qualified professionals imbued with the values of industry, nationalism and integrity dedicated towards the generation, enhancement and transfer of knowledge and technology for the attainment of regional and national development…”
BU has a student population of 17, 315 and a personnel component of 1,180.
A native of Daraga, Albay, the new BU President is married to Dr. Ruben L. Lauraya, a doctor of veterinary medicine, employed with the Department of Agriculture. The couple is blessed with three children: Laura Pureza, 21, Louis Jonas, 19, and Lou Xani, 14.
